Background

I was born and raised in Acequia, El Progreso, Jutiapa, Guatemala. My birthday is June 7, 1978. I have two brothers and a sister and I am the youngest of 4 children to Jorge and Melida Salguero. One brother and my sister live near my parents in Guatemala, while my older brother lives in Los Angeles, California.  I studied at the Mixed Rural School of Acequia and then at the Regional Normal School of the West where I graduated as a Primary Education Teacher.  I am currently entering my 8th year of studying at Lumen Gentium Catholic University in Mexico City. I participated in Orange, California for 5 years in the Youth For Christ Group in the Parish of St. Norbert. At Sunday Mass, I served in the choir, I was a lector, sacristan and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.I was born and raised in Acequia, El Progreso, Jutiapa, Guatemala. What are some of the factors that led to your decision to enter the seminary and discern the question of a vocation to the priesthood?

One of the factors that led to my decision to enter the seminary was going to adoration and Mass every day and I felt God was calling me to be a priest. I also saw the great need for Spanish-speaking priests in the Diocese of Orange.

Who are some of the people who influenced your decision to enter the seminary? What is it about them that assisted you?

The priests from my parish St. Norberts were a big influence on my decision to enter the seminary - Father Pat and Father Agustin, may he rest in peace. I like to see how they love God and how they give themselves to the people. The words from Father Agustin, as he was dying from cancer, touched my heart. He said, "I'm happy to have spent my life serving the Church until the last days of my life." He added, "The cancer is killing my body but at the same time preparing my soul for the encounter with God."

Describe the moment that you knew you wanted to take the next steps to become a priest?

During my second year in Honduras at mass on Holy Thursday I had an encounter with Jesus’ humility and love for me during the washing of the feet. My heart was transformed and for the first time in my life I began to desire the priesthood. Ever since this experience my longing for the priesthood has continued to grow. After spending time in discernment at home in prayer I felt ready to take the next step to formally discern my vocation in the context of seminary.
